Metamedia Association in collaboration with The Design of Visual Communications Department (Arts Academy in Split) is organizing a Speculative Design workshop under the title Rave of the Ritualesque. The workshop will take place from 22 to 27 May 2023 in the space of Studentska udruga Pula (SUP) in Pula, Croatia, and will be led by the Post Workers Theatre team: Demitrios Kargotis, Dash Macdonald & Nicholas Mortimer.
// Workshop Context
“Raves are about our future. They inspire us to become aware of ourselves, our surroundings and our humanity. They are about how we will come together as a species and how we will treat each other. We only need to remember that raves are NOT a way of life. They are a ritual.”
-Graham St John, 2009
Based on Metamedia’s origins as a dance festival, Post Workers Theatre will host a week-long workshop and free party to examine the political potential and creative collectivism of rave culture. We will look at the radical history of rave(ing) as part of the struggle for rights and freedoms outside of the increased privatisation and individualization of society.
The workshop will reimagine the collaborative making processes that embodied the politics behind the partying. Exploring listening activism, field work, public engagement and multimedia based methods that will incorporate soundscape, theatre design and performance to explore how rave can become an enactment of a common struggle.
We will work towards the staging of a rave as a social document that reflects Pula’s current issues and concerns, drawing from the city’s socio-economic history and its transformation in becoming a service based economy supported by precarious seasonal employment.
