The Summer Sessions international talent development network offers residencies to emerging artists, providing a productive environment, high-quality production support, and expert feedback to kick-start or further develop a professional artistic project. Artists selected for the residency program will have the opportunity to publicly present their work in the host country of one of the network’s partner organizations.
The selected artist to be sponsored by the Metamedij association for a residency at V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam is Filip Smrekar.
Filip Smrekar is a young contemporary artist born in 1991. He graduated from Classical Gymnasium in Zagreb and completed his Master’s degree in Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 2017. He is the recipient of several special Rector’s Awards. In addition to participating in numerous group exhibitions, notable ones including “Premio Aimc Studenti” in Ravenna, “Paper based Design” (HDLU) Zagreb, the Plitvice Lakes colony 2018-2019, and the AntiSalon mladih 2018, he has also held two solo exhibitions: at Kset in 2014 and at PHNH in San Francisco in 2017.
//entropy..%// delves into the relentless force of entropy as it erodes sound, space, and structure within a closed system. Technological limits, material degradation, and time itself act as catalysts, accelerating the inevitable decay. Inspired by the fragility of memory and perception, this work captures sound as it disintegrates—trapped in recursive transmission, progressively losing coherence, much like aging audio artifacts crumbling into static. The installation will utilize analog audio bouncing within a physical space, allowing sound waves to degrade naturally through signal loss, reverberation, and environmental interference. Layered upon this, real-time generative processing will introduce digital breakdowns—bit-depth reduction, compression artifacts, and distortion—mirroring the way information degrades when constrained by its medium.
Analog audio gear will be embedded within a tactile, erosive medium—bridging relief and painting—where corrosion, wear, and physical breakdown echo the sound’s demise. Inspired by works like The Caretaker’s explorations of memory loss, //entropy..%// is an immersive audiovisual experience where entropy reigns supreme, unraveling sound into noise, and structure into abstraction.
This year’s network partners include: V2_Lab for the Unstable Media, Museu Zer0, Schmiede, Marginal, PiNA, Teatro di Sardegna.
The program is supported by the City of Pula, Istria County, and the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.
