“Remix of Identities 9” | Open call for remixing contemporary and traditional music

Metamedia Association, in cooperation with Istrian Center for Intangible Culture,has opened the applications for the “Remix of Identities 9” music remix contest. Remix of Identities 9 aims to connect traditional and contemporary music, encouraging innovative dialogues between different cultures and historical periods, through the remixing of traditional songs from Istria and the Croatian littoral in the style of double-voiced tight intervals.
Context & Materials
The theme of this year’s competition are two traditional songs: “Marice fętice” and “Zis am folja”. Within the narrow interval style of Istria and the Croatian littoral, four sub-styles stand out with their specific musical features: Kanat, Tarankanje, Bugarenje and High-pitched diphthongs. Kanat is performed today by the predominantly Croatian population in Istria, on the island of Krk and in Novi Vinodolski. Both songs are related to the Istrian tradition, which is inextricably linked to the daily activities and customs of local communities.
The expert jury, consisting of Milan Đurić, Noel Šuran and Marino Jurcan, will select the two best works. The first prize is 150 euros and the second prize is 75 euros. The best works will be published on a joint album and promoted through the Association’s platforms Metamedia. The competition is open to everyone, and the only condition is the use of samples that will be sent when registering for participation. The basic criterion on which the applications will be judged is that the remixes retain the original identity of the original song so that it remains recognizable.
Participants can register to enter the contest via the online form. Works should be sent to the e-mail address kontakt.radionice@gmail.com with the indication “Identity Remix 8 – application to the competition” until November 11, 2024. To send large files, it is necessary to use services such as WeTransfer and Jumbo mail.
Remix of Identities is a music project of the Metamedij association implemented within the Metamedia Lab and the Metamusic music community studio – creative laboratories of the Rojc Social Center The project seeks to establish a dialogue between traditional and contemporary music, and explores the possibilities of communication between societies, cultures, traditions, historical periods and directions through contemporary music, remixing traditional music with contemporary.
