Last year, after participating in the international residential program Summer Sessions organized by the Metamedij association and the Dutch V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media, multimedia artist Dora Ramljak has now presented the results of her research work as part of the Open_Lab exhibition, which was held in July 2025 in the V2_ gallery space in Rotterdam. This special edition of Open_Lab is dedicated to works created during the residency. Besides Ramljak, artists Lisa Meijer, Kosuke Takahashi, Erik Peters, and Nanno Simonis also presented themselves to the public.
Open_Lab is a series of events organized by V2_. It is dedicated to presenting artistic research in early stages, experiments, and works in progress. This platform provides space for exchanging opinions, dialogue, and feedback between artists, technologists, and the audience. Although it is usually held online, this live edition brought the audience together in the V2_ gallery to directly experience the works created within the Summer Sessions 2024 residential program.
In this context, Dora Ramljak presented the interdisciplinary work “Quicksilver: Valute zatvorenog kruga” which deals with the concept of (auto)immunity and explores ecological and political aspects of metal presence in fish from the Adriatic Sea. The focus of the work was on observing the natural habitat of fish, as well as conducting a study that analyzes contamination levels in fish tissues. In her work, Ramljak connects ecological cycles, the fishing industry, and philosophical approaches to autoimmunity, opening space for new thinking about the relationship between environment, politics, and society.
Dora Ramljak is a researcher of the fragile nature of materials and social representations, with an emphasis on sensory perception of the world. Trained as a photographer and designer, in her transdisciplinary practice she combines and reconstructs various media, developing open and multidisciplinary narratives. The focus of her work is the democratization and exchange of knowledge, and her projects are often shaped within long-term artistic-scientific research and community contexts. Through social work and community engagement, Ramljak continuously expands the boundaries of her artistic practice beyond the academic framework.
Summer Sessions are short-term international residencies intended for young artists and designers working at the intersection of art and technology. A network of cultural organizations Summer Sessions around the world sponsors and hosts residencies. Every summer we offer support to artists and designers at the beginning of their careers to participate in production residencies abroad. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to develop their artistic project in a productive atmosphere with professional support, feedback, and mentorship.
The program is carried out with the support of the City of Pula, Istria County, and the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.
